Frequently asked
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the combined rate: $100 × 8.25% = $8.25 tax, $108.25 total. To find the pre-tax price from a receipt, divide the total by (1 + rate): $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.
Why does the rate differ within a state?
Counties, cities and special districts add their own rates on top of the state rate — Chicago's 10.25% is 6.25% state + 4% local. City pages here use the published combined rate for the city centre.
