Frequently asked
How do tax brackets work?
Income is taxed in layers. A single filer with $75,000 of wages subtracts the $16,100 standard deduction, then pays 10% on the first slice, 12% on the next and 22% on the rest — not 22% on everything.
Do the brackets apply to my gross salary?
No — to taxable income, which is gross pay minus pre-tax deductions (401(k), health premiums, HSA) and the standard or itemised deduction.
When do the 2026 brackets apply?
To income earned during 2026, reported on the return you file in early 2027. Paychecks during 2026 are withheld using these tables.
