How the comparison is calculated
Each row runs the salary through paysums' national calculator for that country with 2026 rules — the same engines behind the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and India pages, verified against the official calculators (HMRC, CRA, ATO, BMF, URSSAF/impots.gouv, incometax.gov.in). The USD salary is converted to local currency at the European Central Bank reference rates of 2026-09-11 (€1 = $1.1592, £1 = $1.3508, C$1 = $0.7216, A$1 = $0.7173, ₹1 = $0.0105; source: ECB), rounded to the nearest hundred, and the take-home converted back. "Tax + contributions" counts income tax and every mandatory employee contribution (Social Security and Medicare, National Insurance, CPP/EI, Medicare levy, German and French social insurance, Indian EPF) — it is not a comparison of income tax alone, and it ignores what those contributions buy (pensions, health cover) and the cost of living. Assumptions per country: United States: single filer, standard deduction, federal tax + Social Security + Medicare; United States: single filer, federal + California tax + FICA + SDI; United Kingdom: income tax + employee National Insurance, no student loan; Canada: federal + Ontario tax, CPP/CPP2, EI, Ontario health premium; Australia: resident rates + 2% Medicare levy, no HELP debt; Germany: Lohnsteuer + Soli + pension, unemployment, health and care insurance (employee share), no church tax; France: cotisations salariales + CSG/CRDS + impôt sur le revenu, one part; India: new-regime slabs + 4% cess, 12% employee EPF, no professional tax.
